Exterior Paint Maintenance Tips for the Winter Months
In the winter months, it is important for you to do exterior paint maintenance to protect the exterior of your home.
We want to help extend the life and beauty of your home’s exterior.
Exterior Paint Maintenance Tips
The following tips can help you to protect the paint on your house from peeling, cracking, and getting discolored in the cold temperatures.
✔ Clean the exterior before winter
One of the main things that can cause the exterior painting to be damaged over the winter is for debris and dirt to get trapped on the surface under a layer of ice and snow.
Over the winter, these materials can break down and cause damage to the paint surface and color.
✔ Pull things away from the walls
Before the winter weather comes, you need to pull items away from the walls of your home.
Shrubs need to be cut back. Any chairs, wood piles, or other stored items should be moved to other areas.
✔ Clear the water lines
This might not sound like something that will harm the paint on your home, but it can.
Make sure that the sprinkler lines are clear of all water so that the expanding ice inside doesn’t break the pipe and cause a damaging flood.
✔ Clean the gutters and drains
If you have leaves, garbage, and branches in your gutters, then you need to make sure that they get cleared out as soon as possible.
This will help you avoid damaging debris coming in contact with your paint surface.
This will also allow water from the winter precipitation to flow away from the house and into safe locations without anything being in the way of the flow.
✔ Be careful with the salt
When the snow and ice come, you might use salt to make sure the walkways and driveways of your house are clear and safe.
If you plan to use salt, remember this important exterior paint maintenance tip.
Make sure the salt doesn’t come in contact with the paint on the house.
It can melt away the color and cause spotting damage that will have to be addressed when the snow melts away.
Painting in Winter
If you end up deciding to paint outside during the winter, you need to be sure you choose the right products.
This is not an area where you can use bargain products and get a good result.
Invest in the right materials, and you will have a better chance at a good result. At Kimberly Painting, we use only premium quality products available from high end manufacturers Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore.
Avoid painting in the cold parts of the day – get out there in the warmest parts of the day.
This will keep the products from clumping and will help the paint to dry quickly.
